The quiet operation and up to 15 miles of electric-only driving range provided by the 530e’s eDrive plug-in powertrain complement the latest 5-series’s focus on luxury. None of the 5’s direct German or Japanese competitors do, leaving Cadillac’s larger CT6 plug-in as its primary adversary. In this new world where BMWs emphasize comfort over driving enjoyment, the 530e at least offers an added element: a plug-in-hybrid powertrain. But then so, too, do the conventionally powered 5-series iterations, which are softer, tech-laden facsimiles of the fine sports sedans BMW once made. The 530e xDrive iPerformance plug-in hybrid lacks the satisfying driving dynamics and sporty character that once separated BMW’s 5-series sedan from the rest of the mid-size luxury pack.
